Auto-Start Failures: Why Reefers Won't Crank in the Cold
A reefer that won't start isn't keeping anything cold. It's a heavy box of warming product waiting for a service call — and in the data, "it wouldn't start" is one of the loudest signals there is.

These aren't five separate problems. They're one problem — the unit can't reliably get its diesel running — described from five angles by the controller. Auto Start Fail came in second only to temperature faults across the entire fleet.
Why start/stop units struggle in deep cold
Many reefers run start/stop (cycle-sentry-style): the engine shuts off once the box is at temperature and restarts automatically when it drifts. Efficient, fuel-saving — and it means that on a brutal night the engine may be asked to cold-start over and over from a fully cold-soaked state. That's exactly the condition that exposes weak links:

The downstream cost is bigger than it looks
An auto-start failure isn't just an inconvenience. When the engine doesn't restart, box temperature climbs — which is why start failures and temperature-out-of-range alarms so often show up on the same units. One mechanical weakness (won't run) cascades into a load-protection failure (product warms up).
Read this carefully: the fault that strands a load is rarely the one you should have fixed. It's the second fault in the chain. Fix the start reliability and the temperature excursion never happens.
Get ahead of it
- Load-test batteries before winter. A resting-voltage check isn't enough — capacity is what fails in the cold.
- Clean and inspect starting connections. "Check starter circuit" is frequently a connection problem, not a starter problem.
- Treat preheat as a real maintenance item, not an afterthought.
- Flag units that fail to start in mild weather. Those are your guaranteed no-shows the moment the temperature drops.
Bottom line
A unit that starts every time isn't glamorous — it's the entire job. Everything the refrigeration system does depends on the engine turning over first, so the codes that say it didn't belong near the top of your priority list, especially heading into winter.
