What "good" looks like in practice
The difference between a real program and a rubber-stamp inspection comes down to specifics. "Check the airflow" invites shortcuts. A number you can measure doesn't.
FPM
Run an airflow test with a meter during high-speed continuous operation. Greater than 1,100 feet per minute is your pass/fail — a measurement you can defend, not a judgment call you can argue about.
The same discipline applies across the service: drain lines run straight, no 90-degree kinks, so condensate flows out instead of backing up. Every electrical connection gets checked for corrosion and secure seating, with dielectric grease where needed — on hybrid units especially, a marginal connection is a future no-start. And fluids and filters get changed and recorded, with the date marked on the filter so the next tech knows exactly where things stand.

Read the alarms before the unit forces you to
Modern reefer controllers are always telling you something. Carrier's APX controller uses a simple color logic — and the fleets that win treat amber as a conversation, not a nuisance.
Some codes are pre-trip alarms a qualified technician is expected to evaluate before the unit goes back into service. An amber caution today is a five-minute follow-up. A red shutdown next week is a stranded load. Logging codes at every service is one of the highest-leverage habits in the whole program.
