Not All Nylon Gears Are the Same: Blue MC901 vs. Oil-Filled NYOIL

Two X4 drive gears can look almost identical on the shelf and behave nothing alike in the unit. The difference isn't the shape — it's the plastic. Here's why Carrier's revised oil-filled gear outlasts the original blue one, and what that means when you're ordering your next box of them.

Order a replacement nylon drive gear for a Carrier X4 and you might get a blue one or a yellow one. Same fit, same job, same spot behind the compressor. Easy to assume they're interchangeable. They aren't — and anyone telling you "a nylon gear is a nylon gear" is reading the catalog, not the material.

The blue gear is cast from MC901. The revised yellow gear is cast from an oil-filled nylon (NYOIL-type). Both start as cast nylon 6, but what's mixed into the plastic before it cures changes how the gear lives and dies in the field — especially against the failure that takes most of these gears out.

Why the compound matters: it's about moisture

If you read our teardown on how these gears fail, you know the number-one wear mode is the "red dust" failure: rust forms on the steel gear, and that rust acts like sandpaper, grinding the nylon teeth away from the inside out. Rust needs one thing to get started — moisture.

And here's the catch with standard nylon: it's hygroscopic. Plain cast nylon 6 soaks up water from the air and holds it. That absorbed moisture sitting against the steel gear is exactly what feeds the corrosion that starts the red-dust cycle. So the material isn't a neutral bystander in that failure — the wrong compound actively helps it along.

  • The basic, unmodified form of cast nylon 6 — strong, hard, and rigid.
  • Heat-stabilized for thermal stability to roughly 260°F.
  • No built-in lubricant. It relies on nylon's own modest sliding properties.
  • Hygroscopic — readily absorbs and holds moisture, which feeds steel-gear rust.
  • A proven general-purpose gear material — but it was never tuned for this failure mode.
The revision

Yellow NYOIL

Oil-filled cast nylon 6 · self-lubricating
  • Cast nylon 6 with lubricating oil dispersed evenly through the whole matrix.
  • Self-lubricating — the oil can't spin out, dry out, or drain out.
  • Roughly 25% lower coefficient of friction than standard nylon grades.
  • Oil fills the gaps water would occupy, so it stabilizes near 2.5% moisture — under half that of unfilled nylon.
  • Better dimensional stability and longer wear life, especially in damp conditions.
The connection The revised gear attacks the red-dust failure from both sides at once: it holds less than half the moisture that feeds the rust, and its built-in oil cuts the friction that does the sanding. Less water, less grinding — the two things the failure needs, both reduced.

The honest caveat: oil-filling trades a sliver of raw hardness for lubricity and moisture resistance. In a gear that's designed to be the sacrificial, shear-on-lockup part of the driveline, that's the right trade — you want it to wear slowly in normal service and still shear cleanly when something seizes. The revision doesn't change the gear's protective job; it just makes it last longer doing it.

What this means when you're ordering

If you're still running blue MC901 gears, you're not running a defective part — you're running the older spec into a failure mode the newer compound was built to resist. When it's time to restock, the revised oil-filled gear is the upgrade that costs about the same and buys you longer intervals between gear swaps, especially on units that see damp, washdown, or humid operating conditions.

One practical note: color is a fast field tell, but don't spec by color alone — oil-filled cast nylon comes in several colors depending on the maker. Spec by part and confirm the compound. If you're not sure which gear you've got in stock or which supersedes the other, that's a quick call to us.

Blue MC901 is good, general-purpose cast nylon.
