Replacing parts is easy to track. Knowing whether you're replacing them too soon is where the savings hide. Here's what a real component-life baseline looks like — and what early seal failures are trying to tell you.

There's a question every reliability-minded fleet should be able to answer and most can't: how long are my components actually lasting — and is that long enough?

Building a baseline

The method is simple. For each part you replace, record the operating hours on the unit when it failed. Do it across enough replacements and you get a distribution — not one number, but a spread showing how long that part survives in your conditions. Lay it against the life you'd expect and the gaps jump out.

When we ran this on a working reefer fleet, the most-replaced parts weren't the expensive marquee components — they were the sealing surfaces.

Why the distribution beats the average

"About 11,000 hours" sounds reassuring until you look at the spread behind it. In the failure-distribution charts, plenty of units gave up their seals well below the expected band while others ran comfortably past it. A tight cluster of early failures sitting under your benchmark is the signal worth chasing — it means a real share of parts aren't reaching the life they should.

Read this carefully: a single early failure is bad luck. A cluster of early failures is a systemic cause — and systemic causes have systemic fixes.

What early seal failures usually point to

Seals and gaskets are the canaries of a reefer. When they fail before their time, the cause is rarely the seal itself:

01 · Vibration & alignment

Excess vibration chews sealing surfaces — usually a mounting or balance issue, not a bad seal.

02 · Contamination

Debris or moisture in the system abrades seals from the inside.

03 · Operating conditions

Chronic overheating or pressure extremes age elastomers and gaskets faster than spec.

04 · Installation quality

Torque, surface prep, and handling at the last replacement quietly decide the next failure.

That compressor seals and engine seals dominate the list — and that manifolds and gaskets fail in matched pairs — tells you these aren't random wear items. They're symptoms worth root-causing.

Turn it into a program

  1. Capture hours at every replacement. No hours, no analysis. This is the one discipline the whole method depends on.
  2. Build a distribution per part, not just an average. The shape of the curve tells you more than the midpoint.
  3. Mark your expected-life band and count how many failures fall short.
  4. Investigate the early-failure cluster for a shared cause instead of replacing on autopilot.
  5. Use the baseline to plan. Once you know real-world life, you can pre-order and pre-schedule instead of discovering failures on the road.
